I still have depression and anxiety. It's why I can't stay awake past 10 to study, but I can stay up until 1 in the morning drawing, cutting, and stringing tiny paper ornaments for the tiny Christmas tree I bought for my flat earlier that day. It's why I can think of a bunch of things I really want to do but I only lie there in bed with my shower towel still wrapped around my head because I don't want to move.

In college, you're hoping to break away from your guardians and become your own boss. But I think you may find yourself disappointed. You could go on like you did in high school, excited about all the new opportunities and responsibilities, but, as I did, find out that many professors treat you like you're still a stupid child wasting their time – even if you're studious and spending your time wisely to prepare for adult life. Or you could make the most of your transition into full adulthood. Because adulthood is a right that isn't bestowed on you lightly – as oxymoronic that sounds.
You're spending a lot of money. Or somebody is. Why waste four years of your life struggling in your classes and failing to earn respect from your new peers (a.k.a. your professors and advisors)?
As I roll up my sleeves for senior year, this is my honest list of suggestions. If you're a freshman, what do you think? Are these suggestions helpful? Do you agree or disagree? |
